HOW TO FEEL CALM AND RELAXED DURING YOUR DENTAL APPOINTMENT
Once we decide on the appropriate sedation method, we will discuss all preparation and aftercare details with you, making sure you feel informed and at ease.
Oral Sedation:
Typically, about an hour before your procedure, you will receive a small pill designed to help you relax. Due to its sedative effects, we advise bringing a friend or family member to accompany you, as you will be unable to drive. Upon your arrival at our dental practice, our staff will welcome you and guide you to a private room for your treatment.
IV Sedation:
Dr. Afifi will gently place an IV to administer medication, inducing a deeper state of relaxation. Once your treatment is complete, you will awaken with little to no memory of your appointment and leave with a beautiful, new smile. Our sedation dentistry approach allows us to perform numerous procedures, including complex smile makeovers, in just a single visit.

Will I Feel Anything During My Treatment?
- Sedation does not replace local anesthetic. We will administer local anesthetic before any procedures. We will not proceed until you are completely numb. Because this is moderate sedation, we will know if you are feeling any discomfort. We will not proceed any treatment until you are completely numb so you won’t feel the procedure. There is very little discomfort, and many patients wake up feeling relaxed and comfortable with almost no memory of the treatment.
Is Sedation Dentistry the Same as Being Unconscious?
- No. You will remain conscious and responsive, but you will be in a deep state of relaxation.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?
- Absolutely! Sedation dentistry is a safe and effective way for many patients to receive necessary dental treatment. Before your IV sedation, Dr. Afifi will evaluate whether this approach is suitable for you.
How Long Will It Take for the Sedation to Wear Off?
- The duration of sedation effects varies based on the dosage, the length of your treatment, and your body’s recovery speed. Because sedation may cause drowsiness, it is essential to have someone drive you home after your appointment. We recommend avoiding driving, drinking alcohol, and operating machinery until the following day.
